Stress Reduction and Pain Management

Ten Aspects of Well-Being

Mindfulness is the practice of moving beyond primary reliance on implicit memory into moment-to-moment direct experiencing.  Over time this practice leads one away from focus on self-concern and develops a more comprehensive point of reference: compassion.

1. Bodily regulation
A balanced nervous system including settled body and awake, alert and/or focused attention (mind)

2. Emotional balance
Appropriate emotional tone – not too high (chaotic, anxious) and not too low (depressive, meaningless)

3. Fear modulation
Self-soothing

4. Response flexibility
“Response-ability” – the capacity to pause and choose

5. Resonance
Sensing the internal (emotional) states of others, resulting in attuned verbal/nonverbal communication

6. Intuition
Visceral sensory perception (self-attunement) – bodily knowing, beyond thinking

7. Insight
Self-knowing awareness, coherent/meaningful life story, and beyond

8. Empathy
Insight and self-attunement plus resonance

9. Gratitude
Large view that includes satisfaction with what is present

10. Morality
Large view that includes what is best for self and others
